September 28th was "Dia por la Despenalizacion del Aborto en America Latina y el Caribe" - Day for the Decriminalization of Abortion in Latin American and the Caribbean. The women of superfeminist blog Centro de las mujeres de Temuco, in Chile, posted a Manifiesto por la interrupción voluntaria del embarazo, Manifesto for the Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy. Thanks to Elia Cea, Sandra López, and Monica Bulboa for a great manifesto.
Mónica had more to say on her own blog. Mujer, tienes derecho a una vida sin violencia (Woman, you have right to a life without violence). Here on Formulaciones Teóricas, Eduardo blogs a copy of his open letter to Argentinian President Nestor Kirchner, arguing in favor of decriminalization.
Indymedia Argentina writes passionately about the struggle in Argentina and provides links to other editorials and photos of rallies and marches. I found more photos here on Lorena Espinoza Pena's Flickr account (someone buy her a pro account, please!) Mambo (from Barcelona) commemorates the day with a gorgeous photo of a protester.
According to the World Health Organization, around 6,000 women die from clandestine abortions in Latin America each year, and 4 million get abortions under risky conditions.
